Answers To Common Questions

What is Judo?

Judo roughly translated means the gentle way and is essentially a "grappling" martial art. Judo began in Japan in the late 19th century under Master Jigaro Kano. Based on many different styles of Jui-Jitsu , or self-defence techniques, he created what is known today as Kodokan Judo. Judo includes throwing, hold downs, and for adults, also arm bars and strangulations. In addition to an excellent means of self-defence, Judo is an Olympic event and can also be practiced as a competitive sport at all levels. Many of our kids aspire to compete for Newfoundland and Labrador in The Canada Winter Games. Most clubs in the province offer both recreational and competitive streams

At what age can you join?

Judo is designed for both men and women. You can start training as young as 6 years of age. There is no "upper" age limit. You may practice Judo well into your senior years.

How much does it cost?

The cost is minimal considering the benefits and compared to other martial arts and most other sports. The registration fee is set by the YMCA/YWCA and is currently $68 from January 7th through to May 1st.  If you are a member of the YMCA/YWCA, the rate is $30.  A Family Rate is also offered for only $10 for each additional family member.

There is also an annual registration fee payable to the Newfoundland and Labrador Judo Association. The fee for Juniors (up to 16 years old) is $25 and for Seniors (over 16 years old) is $30.  The NLJA annual membership provides for insurance while training, competing and travelling to Judo events.  It also covers the registration of all promotions with the NLJA and in the case of Black Belts, with Judo Canada. In addition you will need a "Program Book" which lists all the throws and techniques for each belt level and the requirements to take you from yellow belt through to brown belt.

As you progress through the ranks, there is a very nominal grading fee of $15 for all kyu (non-black belt) ranks which includes a new belt and certificate.

What about equipment?

The only equipment that you require is the Judo uniform, or Gi (pronounced ghee). The cost of the Gi varies by size and is approximately $50. A Gi is made of bleached or unbleached cotton and with proper care will last for several years. You will also need a Judo Syllabus or program booklet. This is a one-time $10 fee that provides you with your program and progress journal from white to black belt.

When do you practice?

Currently we meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:40 P.M. to 9:15 P.M for ages 14 and up and from 7:30P.M. to 9:00P.M on Tuesdays for ages 6 to 13

Hope to see you there !!
