International Activities (Builder)

Early To Late 1950 Sensei Burt studies under the Japanese Master Tomio O'Tani, Sensi, 8th Dan
Mid 1950's Mr. Burt supervised and participated in the building of an Aikido/Judo Dojo (facility) in Devizes, England and did as much of the hard, physical labor as any of those involved
Late 1950's - Early 1960's Prior to 1967 and during visits home to Devizes, England (from European centres), Mr. Burt would travel to and from Wales for Aikido and Judo instruction in the Rhonda Valley under Professor Ken Williams, Aikikai of Wales.
1964-1967 During visits with relatives in Newfoundland, Mr. Burt started teaching both Judo and Aikido
1967 Mr. Burt officially took up residence in Newfoundland
July 1975 Mr. Burt was instrumental in arranging the first seminar in Nfld. by a visiting instructor.  The seminar was held at the Torbay Recreational Centre and lasted approximately ten days.  The seminar was conducted by Professor Ken Williams, Chief Instructor, Aikikai of Wales, United Kingdom.  At the time, we were unaware that there were Japanese Masters in North America or that there even existed a North American Aikido Federation.  Our first two black belts were granted at this time, but were not recognized because they were not affiliated through the Japanese and Tokoyo. One of the two later re-tested and passed.
December, 1975 Mr. Burt was instrumental in affiliating our association with the United States Aikido Federation.  There was no Canadian Aikido Federation at the time.  Mitsunari Kanai, 7th degree black belt and Chief Instructor of New England Aikikai first visited Nfld. to conduct a seminar accompanied by Bruce Stiles of Toronto Aikikai.  This was our first exposure to a Japanese Master.  Our first black belt was attained at this Seminar under the testing af a Japanese Shihan.
August, 1976 Mr. Burt sent the first of his students to the international Summer Camp at Boston and this student achieved the rank of Black Belt.
January, 1976 Mr. Burt arranged for the first seminar in Nfld. by Yoshimitsu Yamada, President of the North American Aikido Federation and Chief Instructor of the North York Aikikai.  The Canadian Aikido Federation was not fully established at the time.  Another of Mr. Burt's students was awarded Black Belt (Shodan)
January, 1977 Mr. Burt was awarded his Ni Dan by the North American Aikido Federation.
November, 1978 Three new black belts were awarded at a seminar in St. John's by Kanai Sensei of New England Aikikai.  All three were Burt's students.
August, 1979 Through the efforts of  Mr. Burt, the first Ni Dan rank was attained by a Newfoundlander at Boston Summer Camp, Boston, Mass, U.S.A.
