Provincial Activities (Builder)

1970-1979 Burt Judo Organizations founded by Mr. Burt in St. John's, Baie Verte, Bay Roberts, Stephenville. Mr. Burt travelled to these locations on a regular weekend basis holding seminars and tournaments in Judo and Aikido. He was extremely supportive of having children, particularly, involved in the Martial Arts as he saw it as a tremendous way of developing self-discipline and building character.
ca. 1973- 1976 Mr. Burt taught Judo (and Aikido) at Holy Cross Boys' School, St. Bonaventure's School, St. Pius X Boys' School, St. Patrick's Hall School and for a short period of time at St. John Bosco. He also saw a Junior Club supervised at PWC. Instruction was done for a particularly nominal fee.
ca. Mid 1970's Mr. Burt taught Judo (Aikido) at the 510 Lions RCAF Air Cadet Squadron, Pleasantville. He also tutored Judo and Aikido to local St. John's residents.
ca. 1971-1978 Mr. Burt established clubs under his technical supervision: the Caribou Dojo, (the home of Aikido in Eastern Canada), Flavin Street, St. John's; the former St. John's Aikikai, Barnes Road, St. John's; the former Holy Cross Association Aikikai Dojo, Ricketts Road, St. John's; St. Augustine's Dojo, Westmoreland Drive, St. John's.  In 1977 he was instrumental in consolidating the St. John's Aikikai and Holy Cross Aikikai Dojo where both then operated out of the old Karate Building in St. John's.  Since his death, Holy Cross Aikido has been renamed in his memory as Graham Burt Aikikai;  St. John's Aikikai is again independent; and St. Augustine's has developed into MUN Aikido..
Aikido continues to be taught outside of St. John's at Lewisporte (an affiliate of Graham Burt Aikikai), Grand Bank and Stephenville.  The greatest expansion has been in the St. John's area however.
ca. 1975: Mr. Burt initiated the federation of the NLAA with the CAF.
1973 - 1974 Mr. Burt was instrumental in the formation of a provincial association (NLAA).
1967 As early as 1967 Mr. Burt was teaching Aikido in the St. John's Rec Centre and at the Riverdale Tennis Club. From there he continued to teach Aikido at the old police barracks, Fort Townsend, and on from there to the old YMCA Building
Mr. Burt took a special interest in teaching children and at the Flavin Street Dojo that was founded in 1974 he would teach children on Saturday mornings, five years of age and up. tuition was never a priority whether it was junior or adult students. Many practiced freely due to their particular economic circumstances. No one was turned away. He felt there was a place in Judo for everyone.\
Until his death in 1979, Graham C. Burt was the Provincial Coach of the NLAA; the Technical Director of the NLAA; the Chief Instructor for Newfoundland, and affectionately known as the Newfoundland Sensei. After his death, the position of Provincial Coach was abolished.
