Budokan Camp

This year for the first time, 2 members of the NLJA attended the Budokan Camp in Ontario. This was an international camp which involved both the Canadian and American Junior National teams. The camp was instructed by all Canadian champions, world and olympic medal winners. The 2 judoka that attended this camp were Nadya Bell (Brown Belt) and Josh Caul (Brown Belt) both from the St. John's School of Judo and coached by Tom Gallant 4th Dan.  Josh went on to compete at the Ontario International Invitational Tournament and received coaching by Jim Walker 5th Dan (coach of 8 Canadian Champions).  As well, Josh trained with Stephen Sheffeld (former Olympic Bronze Medalist)and his wife Archa (Commonwealth Champion), one week before the tournament.

Judo in St. Pierre

Marco Chiaramonte and Gerry Young from Memorial University Judo Club had the opportunity of  participating in a high-level clinic hosted by the Butokuden Dojo in St. Pierre.  The clinic was given by the Conseiller Technique from Federation Francaise de Judo,  Mr. Laurent Peronne who is a high-profile sensei from Bordeaux, France. The trip was the result of an invitation by Mr. Guy Lelorieux of the Butokuden to the University Club who has also had the opportunity of participating in several similar events in recent years.  Marco and Gerry assured us that they both worked very hard during their stay.  It was evident that they enjoyed their judo sessions a la francaise as they were quite anxious to show their newly learned skills..

Upcoming City Wide Judo Tournament

Due to an unfortunate accident, Joshua Caul (-64kg category) of  St. John's School of Judo has a broken arm and will not be able to compete in the upcoming Winter Games. His berth on the team has been filled by Jonathan Kearley of Sankyo Judo Club who won the position in a fight-off on February 6th.in St. John's.

Krista O'Brien medal winner at Canada Winter Games

Krista O'Brien of Sankyo Judo Club became the first female from Newfoundland and Labrador to win a medal at a Canada Winter Games. Krista received a minor concussion in her last match but rebounded well. Congratulations Krista. Greg Young from the CornerBrook Judo club also came very close by winning 3 of his 4 fights in the week-long regular competition and just narrowly missing the medal rounds by a controversial selection process.
