News Around The Province:

Successful Provincial Championships

The 2000-2001 Provincial Championships were held on May 12 in the Thompson Student Center / Memorial University and hosted by MUN Judo club. Competition was especially keen in the Canada Winter Games divisions. In addition, a Provincial refereeing evaluation took place, as well as a Goshin Jitsu Kata demonstration by members of Kokoro Busokai. Highlights of the tournament:

Sankyo wins Bristol Cup for second consecutive year:

George Gillette accepts the Bristol cup for 2000-2001 on behalf of Sankyo Judo Club,
winner of the cup for the second consecutive year.  
The cup was presented at the 2000-2001 Provincial Championships held in St. John's.  
Presenting the cup is Blair Bradbury from Bristol Business Machines Ltd.

Caitlin Ryan wins Allister Fowler Memorial Trophy

Caitlin received the award for being voted the Most Spirited Judoka of the NLJA spring tournament

Krista O'Brien presented with Achievement Award

Krista O'Brien receives a plaque of appreciation from the Newfoundland and Labrador Judo Association as recognition of her achievement of winning a Bronze Medal at the last Canada Winter Games held in Corner Brook.  Presenting the award is Blair Bradbury, President of the NLJA, as Krista's coach and Sensei, Joe Coffey looks on.

Referee Evaluation at the Provincials

A successful referee evaluation took place at the 2000-2001 Provincials. Mr. Patrick Dunne of Kokoro Budokai and Mr. Bob Bugden of Sankyo Judo club both earned their Provincial "A" refereeing certification for their performances at the tournament.  Congratulations guys !

GET A GRIP:  Richard Hartley (right) tries to throw Alex Wesolowski during a 73-kg juvenile division match at the provincial judo championships Saturday at the Thompson Student Center gym at Memorial University.  
Hartley, a member of Corner Brook's Tun Yen club, eventually won a silver medal.

Visit From Sensei Inouye

During the week of March 19-21st we had a visit from Sensei Yeiji (Lanky) Inouye, 8th dan and Chairman of the National Grading Board. Sensie Inouye was invited here by the NLJA to critique prospective candidates for an upcoming dan grading, to conduct a kata clinic and (Nage No Kata and Katame No Kata) and assist the executive in the formation of a grading board. Sensei Inouye proved to be a tremendous asset and invaluable to our organization. His visit was enjoyed by all as we look forward to having him back in the future.

As a direct result of Sensei Inouye's visit and in conjunction with the Atlantic Grading Board, the following have received dan promotions:

AGM 2001

The Newfoundland and Labrador Judo Association annual general meeting was held at the Albatross Hotel in Gander on June 2nd, 2001. Most clubs were in attendance and by most accounts proved to be a productive meeting.

Canada Winter Games Camp

A Regional Canada Winter Games camp was held on Saturday June 9th at the MUN dojo. The camp went from 9:00A.M. until noon and from 3:00 - 6:00 P.M.. It was conducted by Joe Coffey / Male Coach with assistance from Mike Kay / Manager Trainor
