NLJA Annual General Meeting, June 1, 2002

The NLJA AGM took place in St. John's on June 1. Twenty one representatives from clubs across the province met to review the activities of the NLJA and plans for the year ahead. Many thanks to all those who attended this important meeting. At the meeting elections took place for the 2002-2004 term. The election results were:

Gold Medal at the Atlantics

Daniel Aziz from the Memorial University Judo Club won a gold medal in the Juvenile Male 51 KG category at the Atlantic Open Championships held on June 8 in Campbellton, N.B. He also received a bronze medal in the Junior Male 56 KG category. Clubs from across the Atlantic Provinces and Quebec participated in the tournament. Congratulations Daniel! The 2003 Atlantic Championships will be held in Summerside, PEI in early April, 2003.

MUN Judo Club welcomes all NLJA members to train with them over the summer

The MUN Judo Club will continue judo training through June and July. All NLJA members are welcome to join in a training session if you are in the St. John's area. Training is on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:15 to 9 P.M. and Saturdays from 12:30 - 2 P.M.

Marco Chiaramonte competes at Senior Nationals

For the information of NLJA members Marco Chiaramonte of the MUN Judo Club placed 7th in the -73 kg class at the Canadian National Senior Championships held this past weekend in Sept-Isles Quebec. Marco won two fights and lost two fights including one to the eventual gold medallist in this category. Congratulations, Marco! May 20, 2002 Blake Lumsden Judo Tournament a success

Great trip to the Blake Lumsden Judo Tournament in New Glasgow, N.S. - Over 30 NLJA members ventured across the Gulf by ferry to compete in the Blake Lumsden Judo Tournament on May 4. A number of our athletes did very well at the tournament. Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches and parents who helped to make this a memorable trip!

Successful MUN Spring Invitational and Canada Winter Games Qualification Tournament

The MUN Judo Club hosted a successful tournament on May 11. Over 45 competitors participated in the tournament. On Friday, May 10, there was a highly successful all day clinic given by Sensei J.P. Cantin, Atlantic Region and National Junior Team Coach. J.P. was kind enough to finish off May 11 with another shorter clinic following the tournament and Black Belt Grading. An excellent time was had by all!

Black Belt Grading

After the May 11 tournament a Black Belt grading was held for two candidates. Congratulations to Joshua Caul of Kokoro Budokai and George Beckett of MUN Judo Club on their successful promotions to Shodan.

Annual General Meeting Reminder

The NLJA Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2002 at the Guv'nors Inn in St. John's. The meeting will begin at 9 A.M. This is an important meeting as elections will be held for the Executive Committee and there is a proposal for a new constitution for the NLJA. All members are welcome to attend. Voting delegates are selected by NLJA judo clubs. Clubs are asked to let the NLJA Secretary know by May 27 how many people will be attending so that lunch and report copying arrangements can be made.

Weight Category Changes for Cadet/Juvenile Categories

If you participate in tournaments for 11; 12; 13;14 years old, please see the message below forwarded from Judo Canada IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL JUNIOR ATHLETES AND COACHES The Pan American Judo Union (PJU) now conducts Junior Championships for 11-12 and 13-14 year old age groups. These age groups are equivalent to our Intermediate-2 and Juvenile-A categories in the Junior Olympics. The USA Judo Board of Directors has approved the use of the PJU weights for those categories, effective immediately. The weights are different from the ones currently in use and are listed below. These will be the weights that will be tracked on USA Judo's elite rosters for team selection and other elite benefits like camps, and WILL BE THE ONES USED at the 2002 National Junior Olympics in July and Jr. US Open in August. USA Judo has recommended to the U.S. Judo Association and the U.S. Judo Federation that they also adopt these weights for their 2002 Junior National tournaments. The new weights are as follows: Intermediate 2; Born 1990-1991 Boys & Girls 28 kg. 31 kg. 34 kg. 38 kg. 42 kg. 48 kg. 53 kg. +53 kg. Juvenile A; Born 1988-1989 Boys & Girls 36 kg. 40 kg. 44 kg. 48 kg. 53 kg. 58 kg. 64 kg. +64 kg. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT CHANGE. Please distribute this notice as widely as possible, so that athletes who attend this summer's tournaments will be aware of the new weight categories. Entry forms for the Junior Olympics and Jr. US Open will be updated on May 1, 2002.

March 16, 2002 NLJA 2002 Provincial Championship Tournament a success

The 2002 Provincial tournament was held on March 16 in St. John's. A record number of competitors (eighty three) competed in 156 bouts during a long but action packed day. In addition to the regular tournament there was also a series qualification bouts for the Canada Winter Games team candidates. A successful Canada Winter Games training camp was held on Friday, March 15 and there was also a Refereeing Clinic given on the 15th by Mr. Joe Serianni, 5th Dan and Chair of the Judo Canada Refereeing Committee. A meeting for Canada Winter Games candidates parents with the CWG Coaches and Manager was held Saturday evening after the tournament.  The Alister Fowler Memorial Trophy for most spirited judoka in the tournament was awarded to Chris Motty of the Goose Bay Judo Club. The Memorial University Judo Club won the Bristol Cup for the judo club with the most points won by its members at the Fall and Spring provincial tournaments. NLJA Points Updated

The NLJA Points competition for competitors and clubs has been updated. The points competition is a new system for tracking the competition successes of our members and clubs at local and provincial tournaments.  For a fuller explanation of the NLJA Points system see the explanation on the NLJA web site!

May 11 Qualification Tournament

May 11, 2002 St. John's regional tournament and Canada Winter Games Qualification tournament - After a thorough discussion, the NLJA Executive Committee has confirmed that a mandatory Canada Winter Games qualification tournament will be held at the May 11, 2002 tournament in St. John's.  Participation in the Blake Lumsden tournament on May 4 is optional for Canada Winter Games candidates.

Visit from Jean Pierre Cantin

J.P. Cantin, the Atlantic Region Judo Coach, will be visiting the province again during the May 11, 2002 tournament. We will be setting up another training opportunity so that as many judoka as possible will have the opportunity to train with JP.

NLJA AGM

The 2002 NLJA Annual General Meeting will be held on June 1, 2002 in St. John's. This is an election year so all clubs should be working on nominations for the Executive of the Association.  Put this date in your calendars!

Atlantics and Nationals

Reminder that the Atlantic and National Championship tournaments are coming up in the next few months. If any club is interested in sending competitors to these competions please contact the NLJA Executive Committee.

News February 25, 2002

1. The technical package for the NLJA Spring 2002 Provincial Championship Judo tournament is now available on the NLJA website at http://webhost.avint.net/astra/nlja.htm. The tournament will be held at the Memorial University gym in St. John's on March 16. On March 15 there will be a Canada Winter Games training camp and a refereeing clinic given by Mr. Joe Serianni of Judo Canada. Mark this one on your calendars!

2. A revised calendar of events will shortly be available on the NLJA web site. Most significantly, Atlantic Coach J.P. Cantin will be visiting Newfoundland again from April 4-7. More details to follow about his visit. The Atlantic Senior & Junior tournament has been rescheduled to June 8, 2002 in Campebllton, New Brunswick. The NLJA is working on supporting a big Newfoundland turnout for the May 4 Blake Lumsden Memorial Tournament in New Glasgow, N.S.

3. There will be an Easter Canada Judo Championship tournament on April 27, 2002 in Edumunston, New Brunswick.

4. The Memorial University Judo Club will be hosting a regional judo tournament on May 11 at MUN. This will also include a "points" competition for Canada Winter Games candidates.

5. Ms. Erin Bradbury has recently been appointed as the Female Coach for the 2003 Canada Winter Games team. She will work with Male Coach Joe Coffey and Team Manager Mike Kay.

News January 18, 2002

1. MUN Winter Invitational Judo Tournament, Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002 in the gym at the MUN Physical Education Building in St. John's. This is a regional tournament for the East coast folks but any member of the NLJA is welcome to attend. A copy of the tournament technical package will be emailed to all clubs and will also be available on the NLJA website shortly.

2. Reminder - the NLJA Provincial Championship Judo Tournament will take place on March 16, 2002 in the MUN gym in St. John's. A Canada Winter Games training camp will be held on March 15. Keep this in your calendar.

3. The NLJA events calendar has been revised and is available on the NLJA web site. Note the Atlantic Championships, April 7, 2002 in Campbelton, N.B. and the Blake Lumsden tournament in New Glasgow, N.S. on May 4. The NLJA is looking at ways to assist members to attend these tournaments.

4. Information from Judo Canada has been received about the National Junior/Juvenile and Senior tournaments. Copies of the technical packages will be sent to each NLJA club. A notable change is the new restriction on drop seoi nage or seoi otoshi techniques for juvenile competitors or younger. They are no longer permitted to drop to their knees when using these throwing techniques.
