4. Judo Canada update on international competion by Andrzej Sadej, Judo Canada Sport Director Tournaments in Tallin and Minsk concluded the EJU tour 2003. Canadian athletes experienced a great success this year. Canadians were entered to 11 tournaments in this tour. The total of 52 entries resulted in 11 medals and 6 top 7 positions (this does not include results of the Kano and Fukuoka Cup). Canadians fought a total of 142 bouts of which they won 74 which represents better than 50% win/loss ratio. Such ratio is considered a very good performance indicator. In addition we need to emphasize that according to coaching reports, Canadian judoka who were not successful in winning medals this season, were very competitive in bouts that they lost.

I wish to add that this year EJU tour was used for ranking of European judoka for the 2004 Olympic Selection within the European Judo Union. Such scenario increased the usual competitiveness level of these tournaments.Performances in these tournaments were also considered Olympic qualifying standards as per agreement between the Canadian Olympic Committee and Judo Canada. So far (the process continues until the end of April 2004) five Canadian judoka met the standards for participation in the 2004 Olympic Games: Michelle Buckingham in -57 kg; Catherine Roberge and Marie Helene Chisholm in - 70 kg; Amy Cotton in -78 kg; Nicolas Gill in -100 kg; while Keith Morgan met 50% of the standard with one medal won in Germany.

5. 2003 Canadian National Senior and Junior/Juvenile Tournament technical packages available on the NLJA web site. Judo Canada has also sent a note stating "As recommended by the Judo Canada Technical Committee, at the Sr. National Championships 2003 athletes can be entered in both, the Nage No Kata tournament and the Shiai."

4. Nicolas Gill rules in Hungary (from Judo Canada)
The great performances of Canadian judoka continue. After a unprecedented weekend of success at the Tournoi du Paris, our athletes delivered again. The past weekend two EJU A category tournaments took place in Budapest (males) and Leonding, Austria (females). In Leonding, Marie Helene Chisholm won a silver medal and Amy Cotton won a bronze. Luce Baillargeon placed seventh. Aminata Sall, Olia Berger and Isabelle Pearson had both 1 win and 2 loses and Brigitte Thibeault was eliminated in the first round.

Canada's number one judoka, Nicolas Gill, stayed on course with excellence Sunday in Hungary. The Montreal native won his five bouts to capture the gold medal in the under-100 kg category at the Budapest Tournament. "It was a long and tough day," said Gill who won three of his bouts due to an accumulation of penalties by his opponents.

"My most difficult bout was the semi-final against Antal Kovacs of Hungary, Olympic champion in 1992. I was in a precarious situation since I was trailing in points. The crowd was very much behind him. It was a close battle and I knew my only way out was to stay active to force him to be penalized for a lack of combativity." This is exactly what the double Olympic medallist did. In the final, Gill, 30, thought he would easily defeat Mario Sabino of Brazil but the South American was not ready to give the bout away. "I had a mental lapse," he said. "I wasn't as concentrated but again I was able to force my opponent into penalties. Therefore, even if I wasn't at my best, I found a way to win."

Keith Morgan of Montreal (-90 kg) was limited to a single bout, losing to Matyjaszek of Poland in the opening round. The only other Canadian in Hungary, Gonzalo Ibanez of Regina, had a 1-2 record on Saturday.

With these 3 medals over the past weekend, Canadian judoka experience the most successful Winter season to date (in the EJU A category tournaments), with a total of 7 medals. Considering that this year the European Judo Union utilized these tournament for their continental selections to the 2004 Olympic Games (which makes these tournaments even more competitive than they were in the past), performances of our athletes look even better. And the tour is only at its middle point.

5. CBC is looking for young athletes (for a tv show) CBC is looking for amazing young athletes (early 20s or younger) with inspirational stories, young athletes that have either made a difference in their community or sport, have over come adversity in order to compete, are leaders in their sport/role models

Here is a great opportunity for a free, national television exposure of your sports and athletes. An exciting new series will begin airing on CBC Sports in June titled "Hero". The show is about young athletes across Canada, who have overcome challenges in order to compete and participate in their sport and kids that sport plays a significant role in their lives. CBC is interested in profiling young athletes out of the main, kids who are making a difference in their community, school or with their peers. It can also be a personal challenge story as well. It is an opportunity for Canada's youth to see examples of athletes across Canada that are not only inspiring but are not often profiled in the media. Athletes must be early 20s or younger.

Send your athlete suggestions (with a short profile) to Phyllis Ellis,CBC Sports, 416.205.3574 (phyllis_ellis@cbc.ca) and myself, Sophie Castonguay (sophie@paralympic.ca) in order to increase our stories/profiles database).
