I realize that this welcome note is rather late but the NLJA Executive has been trying to firm up dates for activities. We all hope that you have had A good summer and are getting your clubs started up again. Here are some items from the NLJA that you should be aware of:

1. New NLJA membership form - we are requiring that clubs return a copy of the NLJA membership form for each registered member this year along with their NLJA/Judo Canada fees. This is important from a liability standpoint for our insurance. Please have all of your club fees paid to the NLJA by the end of November. Note that Judo Canada fees for yudansha must be paid through the NLJA. A copy of the NLJA membership form was distributed with the 2003 AGM package, is available on the NLJA web site, and another paper copy will be sent in a mailing to go out shortly. A copy in word format is attached to this message.

2. Referee Code of Conduct - following from discussion at the AGM all active referees are asked to sign the Referee Code of Conduct form and return it with their registration. This form will also be distributed in the upcoming mailing.

3. Reminder about the St. Pierre judo tournament on November 22-23, 2003. If you intend to participate you should contact the St. Pierre organizers. Also please inform Piotr Waclawek of the NLJA Executive (email: piotr@navsim.com).

4. Fall 2003 NLJA Tournament - unfortunately the Indian Head club is not able to host the annual Fall NLJA tournament so it will be held in St. John's on Saturday, Nov. 29 from 12 -6 P.M. in the MUN Physical Education building gymnasium. A technical package will be distributed later in October.

5. For 2003/04 the Executive will continue the funding policy implemented last year for support for travel to NLJA provincial tournaments:

"For each NLJA member club travelling more than 200 km to participate in tournaments $30 in funding will be provided for: each competitor who participates in the tournament; one coach from each club; one referee or tournament official who participate in the operation of the tournament. A maximum amount per club per tournament will be set annually by the NLJA Executive. The maximum amount will be the same for all NLJA clubs. For 2003/04 the maximum funding per club will be $600"

6. Potential candidates for Black Belt grading are encouraged to contact Bob Simms, chair of the NLJA Grading Committee. If sufficient people are interested it may be possible to arrange some grading preparation clinics as well as grading opportunities. The 2003 updated Judo Canada National Grading Syllabus is available on the web at http://www.judocanada.org/members/grading/syllabus.html

7. 2005 Canadian National Senior Judo Championships in St. John's - work is progressing on organization for this major national tournament. Anyone interested in helping out with this tournament should contact George Beckett
