There was a very successful Judo Weekend held in St. John's on the weekend of November 11-12. Included was a black belt grading as well as instruction by a variety of coaches and demonstrators. The two-day event was well attended by most of the clubs across the province. The components of the instruction were as follows:
In addition Maurice Sheppard was presented with his Yondan (4th degree black belt) certificate by Bob Simms at the conclusion of the event. Maurice had a successful evaluation in Sydney, Nova Scotia on July 22nd of this year. Congratulations Maurice!
From Bob Simms, Chair of the Provincial Grading Board:
This may have been an historic grading with ten successful candidates. It was indeed a great event not only for those graded but also for all participants to enhance their kata and technical skills I believe it also contributed significantly to building camaraderie for the Association Hopefully some of the new shodans will continue and help in the building of judo throughout the province.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Judo Association has a new logo. You may have noticed it at the top of this page. The logo was designed by Stephen Wheeler of Kokoro Budokai, CBS. Below is the interpretation from Stephen:
- The red spot is meant to represent the place of Judo's origin: Japan
- The circle represents circular motion. One of the tenants of judo.
- The image within the circle are of two judoka, one throwing and the other thrown, yet if you were to turn it you would see how one can become the others.
- There are also elements of the yin/yang symbol and represents balance, another tenant of judo (give and take, push and pull)
- From a design point of view the simplicity of the logo will translate well to t-shirts, caps, lapel pins and particularly crests and medals
